Music & Rituals

The months leading up to presidential inauguration are fraught with political unrest. The words from the opposing parties cut like knives and each politician battles to become the leader of the free world. For months politics divides our country. Then, some 72-78 days after the election, the whole country watches united with hopeful eyes as the new president ascends.

I chose to investigate a presidential inauguration for this blog post because I think it is a beautiful few hours where music overtakes the harsh political realm.

The national anthem is an integral part of this ceremony. Although not a traditional call-and-response piece, it feels as though Lady Gaga is leading the it is a very communal song that almost every American knows by heart. This song echoes resilience and hope, and reminds us that we live in a land of freedom and bravery. The song is mainly conjunct which makes it easier for everyone to sing along. This song is also very consonance. The harmonies are in agreement and sound at rest and hopeful. This is a unifying moment where everyone turns to the same flag, sings the same song, and puts the same right hand over their heart. Below is Lady Gaga's rendition of the National Anthem performed at the Biden-Harris Inauguration.

Another song played that was played at the Trump inauguration was, "God Bless the U.S.A" by Lee Greenwood. This rendition contains many chordophones such as violins and guitars. This song encompasses what it means to be an American. The song's words teach listeners that even if all is lost, we still have the beautiful freedom in America. A beautiful aspect of this song is how you can see veteran's  singing in the audience. Veterans have sacrificed so much, and it was moving to see them singing.

My Country Tis of The by Aretha Franklin is a ballad to America and the American Dream. It also has religious elements that show through the lyrics. As I began to re-listen to the music, I noticed that it has the same melody of "God Save The Queen". The timbre of Franklin's voice is almost haunting as she belts out the disjunct notes. I may be reading into this too much, but the choice of black clothing almost mourns some of America's past while singing about the hopeful future we have.

In conclusion, I love how God music can unify us even in our darkest days. The political realm is so divisive, and music is something that can unite us. I think it is because so much of our nation's music is communal. Everyone can sing the National Anthem or God Bless America, and everyone can connect with the words of hope and freedom. America is not perfect, but listening to this music reminds me of the expansive freedom we have.

  3. Hey Anna! My brother is in the Military (Air Force branch), and I take the National Anthem seriously. I feel like every time the National Anthem is played it gives me a time to honor my brother and those who are fighting for our country. Lady Gaga's voice is beautiful, and she sings the National Anthem well.
